As parents, we all want to encourage our children to read as much as possible, and in order to do so, we need to make opportunities to read constantly available and enticing. All of us love to have our own little quiet hidden-away space, and children more than any. That’s why it’s important to create a little nook or corner in their room, that is on their level, and set apart for quiet time with a book.
As you can see from the picture of my created space, the book sling (link below) is low and easy to reach. The books are displayed, so that the child can see part of the book cover, and recognize their favorites. The space is nestled beside a tall dresser, which hides it away from the entrance of the room.
A comfortable chair is placed between the fabric bookshelf slings and a bright window, offering plenty of natural light. (Our friend Baruch the Bear is demonstrating the comfort of the space beautifully!)
As a final touch, I hung one of my own favorite childhood pictures; The Lady of Shalott by John William Waterhouse, which is a representation of Lord Tennyson’s well-known poem. A poem greatly loved and portrayed by Anne of Green Gables in the children’s classic!
HERE is the pattern to make your own fabric bookshelf slings!
Once you’ve created a reading space for your child…what do you fill it with? There are so many books, so many classics, so many subjects. Our family has encountered some really great children’s books along the way, but also many average and not so great books as well. This was what personally motivated me to write my children’s book on prayer, Mommy, Mommy, When You Pray. I wasn’t happy with any of the early introductory books on prayer, as far as inspiring a true and enthusiastic joy for the prayer of thanksgiving, especially in the simple and ordinary, every-day events in a household and family.
